I always look forward to and enjoy rides where Trevor is the ride leader, but then so must everyone else – 22 bikes,  26 people and Kipper assembled at Nicholls in the morning sunshine all anticipating a good day. The forecast promised decent riding weather and the morning was quite warm.  With some help from Peter the crowd was quietened so Trevor could deliver his briefing and then we were off to Boorowa and the Superb Parrot cafĂ© for morning tea.

Meeting by the sign of the Supurb Parrot

After partaking of the lovely pastries, coffees and hot chocolate to be had at the Superb Parrot we left for Crookwell along the Rugby and Narrawa Roads enjoying the endless variety of twisties along the way.  However the curves were not very well signposted with one wag suggesting that the council placed all the speed signs in a basket then assigned them at random to corners.

We rode through the small town of Rugby where we momentarily increased the population by over 30% later passing the magnificent St Barnabas Church seemingly built in the middle of nowhere as the temperature dropped approaching Crookwell.

Crookwell Hotel has a vast pub menu which was enjoyed accompanied by brilliant conversation of tales tall and true with discussions ranging from whether the Titheridge and Campbell’s manic orange cats were long lost brothers, to Trevor’s tale of the time he accidently doused the back of a another bike rider’s jacket with tomato sauce to Marion’s theatrically Italian speech during which she managed to pour milk over the table, the floor and Margaret.

Kipper shares a table

A gathering of disreputables?

After lunch we left in small groups travelling along the very scenic Grabben Gullen Road to Gunning and Gundaroo where we turned off for home.

Many thanks to Trevor for another great day - terrific weather, company and riding.

Ride Report – Bodalla – 3 August 2014

In lieu of a birthday gift the President decided he would take me on a Club Ride to Bodalla.

Those unwittingly sharing in my covert birthday celebrations were -
  • Michael & Tracey W – Triumph Trophy
  • Garry McC – not a Triumph
  • Kris – not a Triumph
  • Mike K  – not a Triumph
  • Arthur – not a Triumph
  • Craig F – not a Triumph
  • Neil G – not a Triumph
We met at Bungendore (the prerogative of the ride leader) and immediately received a “suggestion” that the Ride Committee should ensure that all meeting points had coffee available. As we had had our coffee just five minutes before (at home) this complaint went unresolved.

Leaving Bungendore we rode through glorious sunshine to morning tea at Dojo Bread in Braidwood. This hidden treasure lies behind the bakery and its honeycomb chocolate slice can be recommended.

Travelling further east we managed to again evade a lurking policeman – we had first come across him on the road to Braidwood. He drove past while we refreshed ourselves there – and later we came upon him loitering beside the road at Nelligen. In both cases friendly motorists had warned us.

We arrived at the Bodalla Dairy Shed just on noon and quickly located our reserved table. The menu seems to have expanded and we enjoyed fish and chips, barramundi, toasties, coffee and milkshakes.

Birthday bunch in Bodalla - Bodacious!

We left by 2pm for a good run back up the Clyde.  Again we saw our familiar policeman having a break at the Spit Roast stop just east of Braidwood and others reported an unmarked car in the vicinity.

We stopped at Braidwood as planned but as we were all full from lunch, and with the traffic increasing, decided to press on. For those of us that live in Canberra’s eastern suburbs, home was only half an hour away. Those living elsewhere had a slightly longer trip home, but as the weather was superb, this would not have been too taxing.

For those who are curious, yes I am still waiting for my birthday present, but the ride was almost the perfect substitute.

Join us on a three-day ride to the beautiful wine region of Mudgee!

We’ll be riding to Mudgee along Tablelands Way, via Goulburn, Taralga, Bathurst and Sofala, and returning via Sofala (that road is worth doing twice!), Bathurst, Cowra and Boorowa.

Accommodation is at the Motel Ningana, which is in the CBD and within walking distance of everything in town.

On Sunday, either go for a ride or join us on a tailored winery and brewery tour with Terry and Jan of Mudgee Wine & Country Tours (Ulysses members).

In a nutshell:

  • Skill Level: 3 (medium length, suitable for most riders)
  • Leave: Caltex Woolworths EPIC, 8:45am ride briefing for 9:00am departure

ALDI sale of motorcycle gear Sat 9 Aug 2014

Trevor sent this email -

I noticed in the recent Aldi brochure that they have some really good pricing - a wide range of motorcycle clothing that meets the European standards.

Given the prices are in some instance less than half the price from the usual suppliers it looks to be worth considering, especially for those on a tighter budget..

Cheers
